There are many types of ball bearings on the market and they all have different characteristics. They can be made from many different materials such as stainless steel, chrome steel and ceramic. There are also hybrids which are a combination of the materials such as ceramic and other traces of metals.
A ceramic ball bearing is made with a stainless steel inner and outer ring. The density of the ceramic ball bearing is lower than that of steel. This fact demonstrates that the centrifugal force from the rolling elements to be lower and that alone extends the bearings life.
There are three types of ceramic ball bearings. These are the ceramic hybrid, the partial ceramic ball bearing and finally the full ceramic ball bearing.
The ceramic hybrid ball bearing is one that is created from ceramic elements of silicon nitride. These ball bearings are resistant to high heat, last longer, are lighter and have a low thermal expansion rate. They are non conductive with electricity and can be used in numerous applications.
A partial ceramic ball bearing is just that partially constructed of ceramic. Basically the rolling elements and the inner ring are made from ceramic. The outer rings are made from steel.
A full ceramic ball bearing is easy to explain. Typically all the rolling elements of the ball bearing consists of silicon nitride and not steel.
The ceramic ball bearing is considered top of the line due to it being so lightweight. The bearing is about forty percent lighter than the other types. It has a lower preload and heat generation in high speed trials. It is considered to have a low friction which results in less heat being generated.
There are many kinds of ball bearings in the marketplace. Each type has its own pluses and minuses. They are made from steel or even ceramic. Ceramic has provided for a more superior product than the traditional steel ball bearings.
