If you haven’t priced a new fishing reel lately, you should do some shopping and see how they have risen in price. There are some baitcasting reels on the market now that retail from $300 to $500! And the last time I looked, an average baitcasting reel was over $100. With these kinds of prices, it’s no wonder many people are buying used fishing reels from ebay, craigslist and online classified sites. But before you head off to buy fishing reels, there’s a few things you need to take into account.
Not all used fishing reels are created equal. Let’s face it, some people list their junk reels for sale because they don’t want to spend the money fixing them. Your objective is not to buy someone else’s problem!
For one thing, never buy a used fishing reel if the description is short and non-informative. I hate to see ads that say “Fishing reel for sale”. If someone really wants to sell a reel, they’ll upload pics of the reel and give an honest description, complete with things they know are wrong with the reel. Even if there is ‘boat rash’, they should state so in the ad.
Another thing you want to know is if the owner has made any repairs to the reel. Right now on ebay, there are several Sellers who buy junk reels and repair them. They then go and list them on ebay. I’ve bought a few of these reels and they are never as tight as new reels. When repairs are properly done on used fishing reels, the reel should feel like new. I don’t know if these people just don’t know what they’re doing, or if they’re just throwing reels together to sell, but I haven’t been happy with any that I’ve bought that have been ‘restored’. Just another thing to watch out for when you buy used fishing reels from online sites such as ebay.
