LEGO Mini FiguresBuilding block toys have been around for over 60 years. The most popular of all building block toys are the LEGO bricks created by the LEGO Group established in 1949. These plastic bricks became quite popular and proved to be a mainstay in many households as the LEGO Groups’ motto “Only the Best is Good Enough” shined through in its products. In 1974 LEGO introduced the very first LEGO people, an addition that would turn out to be a boon for the already popular building brick toys.

LEGO Figures: A History

The very first LEGO mini figures were very basic with only 4 detachable parts. These parts were a single piece that were the legs, a one piece torso with no moveable arms, a head with no face and a hat of some sort. These original mini figures are today fairly difficult to acquire and can fetch a pretty penny on different auction sites like eBay.

A few years later LEGO introduced a new model mini figure that is the standard still today. These figures were included in the original LEGO building block themes that many LEGO sets were modeled after. There were only three LEGO themes originally: Space, Town, and Castle. Since then there have been hundreds of themes that have come and gone but those three have been a constant with the LEGO Group. The mini figures that came with these original themes were very basic and all had the exact same facial expression; a smiley face. Nowadays mini figures have literally hundreds of unique facial expressions and hairstyles and helmets and hats and even molded heads.

The Most Popular Themed LEGO Mini Figures

Although there are dozens of LEGO themed building block sets that fans love to collect, there are a few that are much more popular than others. Some, like the City theme, are exclusive to LEGO and are themes that are not found with any other brand. However in recent years the LEGO Group has opted to join forces with already established brands, like Star Wars, and build LEGO themes that are already popular among the masses. This decision has only boosted the LEGO Groups popularity and helped solidify LEGO building block toys as a force in the toy industry.

LEGO Star Wars Figures

Lego Star Wars FiguresThe first brand the LEGO Group signed a contract with was the ever popular LucasFilms Star Wars brand back in 1999 when LucasFilms first released the Prequel Star Wars films. Star Wars was already huge and could only benefit from a new set of films and the LEGO Group did an amazing job of capitalizing on the Star Wars films’ popularity by producing an initial release of LEGO Star Wars themed sets that were very well received by LEGO fans and Star Wars fans alike.

The most attractive pieces of these Star Wars sets were the LEGO Star Wars figures that were included. Classic Star Wars characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Boba Fett were all there and had the Star Wars community buzzing.  After spending years collecting the same toy figures, now there were a whole new type of Star Wars toy to collect, and LEGO figures are always fun!  There were many firsts for LEGO figures from the Star Wars sets.  The first “short legs” for mini figures were introduced with the Yoda LEGO figure and the young Anakin Skywalker figure.  The Yoda Star Wars LEGO figure was also the first to have a molded head of a totally different shape and size from the standard LEGO figure heads.

Some of the more rare LEGO Star Wars mini figures include the Jango Fett LEGO minifigure.  Jango Fett is only included in one LEGO set, that being the Jango Fetts’ Slave 1 Star Wars set.  If you are lucky you can find one of these building block sets for around $250 new and un-opened.  If you don’t want to spend that much money you can get the included mini figures, Jango Fett and a young Boba Fett, for about $75 for the pair.

LEGO Batman Figures

Lego Batman FiguresThe Batman series of LEGO building block sets is, for the most part, discontinued by the LEGO Group.  Despite that (or maybe because of that) LEGO Batman sets are extremely popular and have developed a huge following of fans.  Short supply + huge demand has resulted in some very extreme prices for LEGO Batman building block sets on different auction sites and on sites like Amazon.

One alternative to collecting Batman LEGO sets is to simply collect the LEGO Batman figures that come with these sets.  Batman LEGO figures are super fun to collect but are pretty rare themselves.  Some figures, like the LEGO Catwoman mini figure, can sell for as much as $50 a pop!  That is fifty big ones for a small plastic toy building block, but many fans are happy to pay that rather than the price for a complete Batman building block set.  The Batman LEGO set that includes the Catwoman figure, for example, can go for as much as $200.

LEGO Spider-man

Lego Spiderman FiguresThe Spider-man themed LEGO building block sets were released in ’02 under LEGO’s Studio theme.  These LEGO toys were built with the intention of allowing the builder to not only play with the set as spider-man but also to allow play as a movie maker.  This is another theme that has been discontinued by the LEGO Group with no sets being released since 2004.

The Spider-man LEGO figures are fairly rare and usually fetch a good amount because of the popularity of Spider-man.  Among the Spider-man LEGO mini figures created are: Spider-man, Mary Jane and the Green Goblin.

Where To Find Rare LEGO Figures

LEGO figures are the center point of many LEGO collections.  As far as size goes, these toys do not make much of an impact.  However because of the care and attention to detail the LEGO Group has dedicated to these toys, as well as the LEGO brand itself, LEGO figures continue to be extremely collectible and very fun to play with.

Finding some of the more rare LEGO mini figures can be quite expensive and a chore.  A good place to start is with your common eBay auction.  Doing a quick search for “Bulk LEGO mini figures” or “LEGO mini figure lot” can yield some awesome results.  You may find yourself looking at auctions that are a little higher than you would expect but often times a seller will not be very educated in the field of LEGO figures and can have a very rare LEGO figure included in his bulk sale of LEGO pieces.  This can mean you pay $50 or so for a lot of LEGO figures that happens to include a mini figure that is worth $50 by itself!  This happens much more often than one would think and can lead to that hard to find LEGO figure for your collection of for re-selling.

I bought a small Lego Santa many years ago. My grandson took it apart and I can’t figure out how to put it back together. Of course I don’t still have the directions. I can’t find one like it online. Any suggestions? Thank you.
