As technology improves, the consumer is making more and more demands upon producers of computers and peripherals. The demand for faster, more compact devices has caused designers to create novel and interesting innovations. This demand has also led to the improvement of older tech. For instance, the USB CD drive used to be a cutting edge technology, but today it is becoming outmoded, in the face of superior DVD devices.

Today most people favor the USB DVD drive. A DVD drive functions almost identically. The information is encoded into minuscule depressions on the disk within the device. A laser allows these depressions to be optically read and converted back into digital code that the computer can read.

A great number of consumers like the device because a vast quantity of of space consuming content such as pictures, music, or video can be stored. DVDs only read one side, but you can actually buy DVDs that have double sides which can be written to. A double sided DVD has a storage capacity almost 30 fold greater than older CD drives, in a package of identical dimensions. This makes the advantages of DVD technology for USB drives undeniable.

You will need to consider what sort of multimedia content you will be working with. CDs can be played in DVD players, but not the reverse. Newer systems are usually compatible with older formats but not vis versa. This is yet another advantage of DVD USB drives.

Users began switching to USB instead of the older cables when they first hit the market. USB technology has undergone many innovations as it transitioned from type 1 to type 2 connections. Whereas in the past a maximum transfer rate of only twelve megabits per second was possible, a blazing four hundred and eighty per second is now made possible by the new tech. This vast improvement in speeds is a miracle of modern computer design.

With transfer rates so fast and much quicker access times, it is obvious why the USB DVD drive is to be preferred. Time is money and speed is life in the modern business world.

It is easy to see the reasons why so many producers now utilize DVD drives for their computers and why they are becoming such a hot ticket for the home computer user as well. In a tough economy, only products that have real value will draw people to spend their hard earned dollars on them. In this regard, DVD USB drives certainly fit the bill.
