Laptops are one of the most essential tools a person can have, whether it’s work for a business or study for a student, it’s portability is an integral part of why it is such an integral piece of equipment. However, when speaking of portability, many consider only its size and that it has all the functionality of a desktop computer in one flat shape. The true meaning of portability goes much further, considering size, weight, battery capacity and hardware features. As technology progresses, so does the usefulness of the laptop, especially one like the Aspire One netbook.
First of all, let’s talk computing power. This particular netbook wasn’t made to rival a desktop nor even come close. Its processor is substandard and there’s barely enough of the recommended RAM to run Vista in several of the available models. The hard drive in the more costly models is okay, 250GB is a decent amount for the average user. The wireless and wired connections are the standard 10/100 ethernet port as well as a 802.11 b/g internal wireless adapter, which are both suitable for any network, so compatibility isn’t a problem.
The features of this laptop can be surprising, given the subcompact nature of it. The monitor ranges from the tiny 8.9-inch to 11.6-inch, giving decent resolutions for the laptop. Every models of the Aspire One netbook comes with an integrated webcam, but not all of them have bluetooth feature. Now for portability. The models balance out between offering either 3-cell batteries or 6-cell batteries, which is short or medium battery lives respectively. You can expect times of around two to three hours on a 3-cell, if the laptop does minimal work and five to six on a 6-cell, under the same conditions. Under stress, however, you’ll find that the battery life decreases significantly quicker.
This is a budget machine and as such, you shouldn’t expect a powerhouse nor one that lasts for hours and hours on end. However, as mentioned, if your budget is short and you only wish for basic usage, for example, instant messaging, word processing and similar activities, then this is a good machine to buy.
