Amongst some of the most popular rings available to purchase are emerald rings. This is because of their beautiful looks and the history they carry. The emerals rings can come in many different sizes and forms, for example round or diamond shaped, with the larger the gemstone on the ring, the more valuable it is. By tradition, the emerald gemstone is a gift given to people who have a birthday in May. They are also commonly seen at weddings and engagements. Furthermore, emerald jewelry is by history given to couples who reach 55 years together as a celebratory gift.
Emeralds are a natural commodity that is mined for deep under the ground, and actually comes from Beryl. They have a green glow to them as it contains vanadium and chromium, as it is these properties that give the emerald its color. Emeralds can be found all over the world on all continents, with a higher concentration in certain areas, however they are generally known as being extremely hard to mine for, as due to the amount of impurities in the rock, it is hard to extract large pieces of the gemstone.
Because of these impurities that come with emeralds, they often need to be treated with a cedar oil or a synthetic oil. This will fill the cracks in the gemstone, and will improve the overall looks of the emerald. If however you are buying any emerald jewelry, always check with the seller if it has been treated, because if they have, then the seller must by law advertise that it has been oil treated. Emeralds are graded according to their colour, clarity, cut and crystal qualities, or the 4 C’s. Magnification is not needed as with crystals when grading occurs.
Emeralds can be very delicate, and you must take a number of precautions when taking care of the gemstones. Try to keep them away from sunlight or hot environments. This may cause the oils in the emerald to dry out, causing cracks and also a loss of colour. Another thing to avoid is using cleaning chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners, as these will again cause the emeralds to dry out and crack.
In terms of the metal used for the actual emerald rings, the most common ones are gold or platinum, because of its solidarity and because the colour of the metals favours the green of the emerald. Titanium is also becoming widely used.
