Consumers are able to buy 3D television sets in the UK for the very first time. Samsung 40 inch models are now available from certain John Lewis branches and Johnlewis.com. This Samsung LED TV is less than 3cm thin and yet packs in a whole host of advanced technology. Its slim dimensions are made possible by LED backlighting technology.
This TV features an integrated Freeview HD tuner which will allow you to watch subscription-free HD broadcasts. To watch Freeview HD broadcasts you’ll need to check that you can receive it in your area. A Full HD 1080p resolution and the Samsung HyperReal Engine deliver incredible images with rich colour and vivid details. It’s a great choice for sports and action movies thanks to 200Hz Motion Plus processing which analyses and adjusts every frame so nothing goes by in a blur. The Ultra Clear Panel is also able to reduce reflection and increase contrast for a better picture.
It will be June before any made-for-3D broadcasts are screened, meaning that until then viewers will only be able to enjoy 3D viewing with a limited amount of 3D titles. The new hardware, made by Samsung and named the UE40 C700, will however add depth to the picture of normal broadcasts and Blu-Ray films. The televisions sold in John Lewis will come loaded with Monsters vs Aliens, but the sets will also be available in Curry’s and Comet in the next week. 3D is the latest development designed to boost the consumer electronics market, after the dawn of high definition and wide-screen TV.
Screen Digest, the media consultancy, told The Independent 185,000 3D TVs were expected to be sold in Britain this year, but that by 2015 there would be 7 million of the sets in Britain.
Dan Simmons, a consultant, said: “If you are a person who would buy a high-end TV then definitely a 3D TV would be a good option, but if you are someone who spends a few hundred pounds on a TV then you are probably going to have to wait a couple of years until prices come down.”
