When shopping for a cabinet in which to store your guns it is important to consider what type of storage you want for the space that is available. There are wall mounted gun racks, plain locking storage units, lock boxes and pistol safes, gun cabinets and gun safes to name but a few of the options out there. The goal of all these storage methods is to keep guns safely locked away when not in use although some do have a display function too.
Gun safes are some of the best cabinets available. Top end brands will typically lend good security, fire protection and watertight storage to your collection. Though expensive, it is possible to save a lot and still have a quality safe by buying a used one. Many times the used ones are available because the previous owner wanted a larger or more up to date model. Those that are undamaged are a great cost saver. Others may have a dent or scratches but since most gun owners do not want their safes in a part of the house regularly seen by visitors, these defects do not matter. They do not affect the performance of the safe itself for securing guns.
The qualities to consider when selecting a gun cabinet or safe are its anticorrosion capabilities, door seals, fireproofing, wall thickness, waterproofing, type of lock, type of hinges and whether or not it has interior lighting. To prevent rust and corrosion of the contents, the door should seal tightly to block out moist or humid air. To control the humidity and temperature inside the safe, use an electric warming unit or a single low wattage light bulb. Packages of desiccant gel may also be placed inside to collect moisture. Seals should be attached around doors if the existing ones do not completely seal the interior.
Walls should be constructed of 10-gauge steel at a minimum. However, it is much better to have 8 gauge steel that is 3/16″ thick than go with an inferior 10-gauge option. The shell itself should have continuous welds. The interior walls are most fire resistance when made from sheet rock with fiberglass in it or ceramic wool blankets. Safes are not fire resistant without sealing around the doors. External hinges allow doors to open a full 180 degrees, making it easier to get a gun out and to remove the door for servicing if needed. If the door locks are adequate, a door will stay on a safe even if a burglar knocks the external hinges off. The lock mechanism is the most important part of keeping the door attached. These can be manual or digital. A range of biometric locks are available also.
One final factor to consider is that guns with scopes attached can be hard to fit in safes and cabinets. A gun cabinet with a rotating rack gives easy access to guns and allows for storing them with scopes attached. These can be bought ready made or you can download plans from the internet for building your own. Whichever storage method is chosen, your guns will be stored safely until needed.
