Many people are now open to accepting modern gifts including gift cards. Arguably, gift cards are improvement of gift certificates or gift checks wherein the receivers are allowed to purchase their own gifts using these card or papers. Despite its existence for so many years, there are still some who thinks differently about the whole concept of gift giving.
One wrong notion about gift cards and the like is that they are means of stealing people’s money. This is brought about by some news regarding companies declaring millions of profits from their gift cards. The truth is that the whole gift card system is completely legal. Otherwise, the government should have stopped any operation if indeed the system is a sham. It’s true that businesses profit from gift cards because it allows them to promote their business and increase their sales. The only time when a business will completely take a gift card value would be when it’s not used at all before the stated expiration date. If this is the case, then it’s the fault of the card holder and not the company.
Another instance when people doubt the value of gift cards is when they hear news about scams related to discounted and free gift cards. One thing that people should understand is that scams don’t apply to gift cards alone. To protect oneself, a person should check the validity of any promo or offer by reading through the terms and conditions that apply.
One more misleading notion about gift cards is that these are not personal at all. This statement has some truth in it if taken from a traditional perspective. Some would argue that giving gift cards doesn’t imply some effort. But looking from a different point of view, gift cards are indeed personal because it allows recipients to choose the right gift for him or herself. Additionally, some companies even offer gift card printing services that would allow the buyer to personalize the gift card to match the recipient’s likes or interests. This can be done by putting a picture on the card or by having the name of the recipient and a personal message written in the card as well. Other ways to personalize it would be to insert a separate card that encloses a personal message for the receiver.
