If you have ever seen a member of a bar’s staff pour you a soda from behind the bar, you may have noticed that it tends to come from a handheld nozzle pourer that is attached to the counter. This form of draught soda is actually made through a fairly complex system and it is actually mixed together on site, not pre made.
So you may be wondering just how your soda comes to be made on the bar – well there are a few systems that combine to make up the soda. First of all the main flavor of the drink comes from the drink syrup, which comes as a bag in a box, which is then stored in the bars cellar and linked to a hose that is in turn connected to a pipe. All the major brands sell their drinks in this form, and it is a more cost effective way for a bar to serve drinks when compared to selling via a bottle, for example.
Next there will be a canister of CO2 attached to the mixing system. The heart of the mixing system is the carbonator – this takes the CO2 and mixes it with the drink syrup and water to produce the final resulting soda, which is then pumped through a hosepipe up to the bar where it is poured.
So, a drinks dispenser as used in bars are substantially different than those that are found in cafes and restaurants, and substantially different to stand up vending machines and water cooler dispensers that one may find in offices. Being a complex system, these drinks dispensers tend to require a tight maintenance schedule, so bars typically have a company that will regularly service the dispenser system. And it is this system that will your soda the next time you enter a bar.
