Choosing the best fishing reels is relative to the type of fishing you are planning on doing. Most fishermen want their reels to perform in a specific manner that is associated with the type of fishing they are doing. Baitcasting reels are usually used for lake and pond fishing. They have an open spool and the line is controlled with the caster’s thumb. These reels are well suited to being used on a boat and have a long casting distance depending on the weight of the lure being used. They can handle a variety of line sizes which gives the fisherman flexibility to use them in various methods of fishing.

Salt water fishing is done in a completely different manner and the size of the line is much heavier. Because the fish are generally bigger and fight harder the equipment is a heavier duty. The rods have a larger diameter and thus the reels are larger to accommodate the heavier line. Handles are larger and heavier to accommodate more pressure from the fisherman. Pond fishing is generally done with light weight equipment. The fish are smaller and most fisherman prefer a lighter line. Ultra light gear is especially favored for fishing in small ponds and lakes. The challenge of landing a large bass using light weight line and gear is a testament to the skill of the fisherman.

So choosing the best fishing reels depends completely on the type of fishing that is going to be done. This is why fisherman have so many different reels. Each reel performs best in a specific environment and with various types of fishing methods. Cheap reels are great for children but for a serious fisherman it is best to stay with a name brand reel. You do not have to purchase the best there is to offer but you do want a quality reel that will last for many years.
