Giving a cushion cut engagement ring was very popular in the past, but over time, the diamond cutting technologies got better which meant that this cut was superseded by newer more dazzling ones. The less sparkly cushion cut was consigned to history, and considered by many to be too old fashioned to be marketable. However, times change, and there has been a huge revival of interest in antique and vintage engagement rings, especially set with gemstones in the older styles. So cushion cut engagement rings are now widely sought after by couples wishing to add some extra magic to the marriage proposal.
The cushion cut is a 300 year old method of preparing diamonds, and the shape can be either square or rectangular, but is always slightly dome shaped, which is why it is said to look like a cushion. If you are thinking of running down to your local jewelry store to buy a cushion cut engagement ring however, don’t bother. The chances are they will not have any, because they are actually pretty rare these days. The reason is that they were out of fashion for so long that you will only be able to find the ones which were in circulation many years ago. For modern ones and also the antique ones, it is best to search online, but only go to large and highly reputable jewelry sites. One such example is DeBeers, which is world famous as a seller of wonderful diamond jewelry. But beware, although they have some exceptionally beautiful pieces, they also have very high price tags.
DeBeers is out of the range of most of us, so your next option is to trawl the internet for the older diamond rings. Ebay is a great place to look for bargains, and even this kind of jewelry can be found cheaply if you are lucky. Some people have old rings which they don’t know anything about and simply list them as they need the money quickly. They might list “antique ring” or “vintage ring” but not actually know that it is a rare cushion cut ring. That’s to be expected as there are not many around. So make sure you are fairly creative in the search terms you use on Ebay, just in case that gem is lurking where nobody else thinks to look.
Another option is to be on the look-out for somebody offering an oval cut engagement ring. These look quite similar to the cushion cut, and there is a possibility that the seller has confused them. If you are unlucky, and unable to find what you are looking for, then you might like to consider buying an oval cut engagement ring instead, as they are similar in appearance, and far more affordable, leaving you some extra money to put away for the wedding or honeymoon.
Whatever engagement ring you end up buying, remember it’s not the cut of the diamond that’s most important. It’s the feelings of love and the hope for a future together, and that’s what the ring symbolizes.
