If you are planning a vacation in the Pacific Northwest this summer, consider crossing the border to Vancouver, Canada and spending the afternoon on a road trip to Hope, British Columbia.  About an hour east of Vancouver, at the end of the rich farm land of the scenic Fraser Valley where the mountains begin and the flat fields join the rugged, historic Fraser Canyon, chainsaw sculptor Pete Ryan has his studio.

Here you can see North American animals as well as nature spirits carved into signs, decorative door handles, structural posts, furniture and wall plaques.  Each one is unique.  Each one brings a spark of the forest and mountain wilderness into the room, office or property where it finds a home.

Some of his most popular pieces are bear wood carvings of various sizes.  A life-sized grizzly bear holding a Coho salmon freshly scooped from the rapids forms part of the sign that indicates his studio at the side of the Flood-Hope Road, just a few minutes away from the turn-off from the main Highway 1.  Alongside, its curious cub peeks its head out of the end of a hollowed cedar log, as if the parent has hidden it in safety during the hunt for lunch.  Inside the studio, there are smaller and larger versions of bears, coyotes, eagles, wolves, beavers, squirrels and more, carved into table lamps, mirrored dressers, book shelves, coffee tables, and bowls.  Each of these pieces is unique, endearing and life-like, making excellent gifts or signature pieces to give a center of interest to any room or office.

Pete also carves large wall plaques that bring a natural forest theme to a room.  They may depict wolves in a sunset forest, herds of deer cantering over a hilltop, a family of bears fishing at a river’s edge, or gnome and wizard-like figures.  Pete carves these in bas-relief from planks of yellow cedar about one meter square, and finishes them with a highlighting technique that gives them a look of sunshine.

Pete Ryan has carved life-like animal and wood spirit figures which he markets around the world, either by commission to builders in North America and Japan, or through his on-line store.  His chainsaw carvings are reminders of the quiet and freedom of North American wilderness that can offer your guests and clients a brief moment in nature, one of the best relaxation techniques for anxiety in the midst of urban bustle and stress.
