Stocking a few days worth of emergency supplies has always been a good idea. Religious groups, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have recommended keeping supplies of emergency food on hand for years. The events of September 11, 2001 forever changed the face of the American landscape. A few days after the attacks, the Federal Emergency Management Agency made its own recommendations shortly after President Bush founded the department of Homeland Security.

The purpose of a FEMA food kit is to give the members of your household access to essential supplies until relief efforts can provide better quality food. A home owner does not need to store several months or years. The intent cuts down on the overall cost of the food kits that fit the FEMA standards, and make it easier for companies that specialize in food storage to put the ingredients together.

Water is the most important part of any source of emergency food. Water treatment facilities, especially in towns and the cities may be contaminated after a disaster. Residents of some parts of Louisiana did not have clean water for weeks after Katrina. Drinking water can be stored in empty milk bottles that have been thoroughly rinsed out. Placing a small amount of chlorine bleach can help keep the water in drinkable condition until it is needed.

A food kit should contain several easily prepared foods. Your best option would be to buy MREs online.  MREs stand for meals ready to eat which are prepackaged food ready for instant consumption but you can make do with a few household items around the house as well.   Peanut butter provides an easy source of protein that can be stored for long periods of time. A few canned goods can round out the supplies.

An emergency supply of food and water is a good start. A full emergency preparedness kit will also include a non-prescription pain killers, a first aid kit and an emergency supply of any medications family members might need. If the kit is made for a house with smaller children, diapers, formula and powdered milk should be added to the supplies.

While the noodle-based foods stay good for a long time, some of the items placed in food kit may need to be replaced on a periodic basis. The person who assembles the kit may need to check on its contents periodically. If the items are nearing their expiration date, they should be used and replaced.
