Canon’s tiny PowerShots tend to dominate the digital camera market in terms of the smallest yet still full-featured digital cameras, and the A480 is no exception. It’s tiny, about 3.5 inches long, and a limited (3x) optical zoom, but a surprisingly high megapixel count – 10 megapixels – which will provide picture quality good enough to create up to a 13-inch by 19-inch picture with no quality loss.

For the most part, it’s a a good trade off between price, size, and quality. You can find this PowerShot for less than $100 most places, making it an excellent beginner’s camera for the young and old alike, and it takes excellent closeups, or macro, shots for its size and price range. It takes batteries instead of using a charger, but for most people who need mini digital cameras, that’s a logical feature. Many of the situations where ultra compact cameras are best, like while traveling or for outdoor activities like hiking, you may be taking many snapshots in one go, and a dead battery is much more easily fixed with fresh batteries than by trying to find an outlet to plug the camera in for a few hours.

However, flash is the one are where this mini digital camera is really lacking – you have to wait between shots for the flash to recharge, not unlike on a disposable camera, and the results can easily appear washed out due to a low-quality bulb. I’ve had a difficult time getting consistent results when taking pictures in poor lighting, though I may get better with practice.

It’s also not the sturdiest-feeling camera – it’s a little plastic-y and fragile-seeming, though I haven’t seemed to do irreparable damage to mine yet, and I know some people who have given their camera to their young children, so this may be an erroneous assumption.

Finally, one of my favorite aspects of this PowerShot (the Canon PowerShot A480) is that it has such a quick aperture, or shutter speed, for its size and price tag, meaning that you can take photos of fast-moving subjects with little to no blurring, and the built-in stabilization feature also helps reduce blurring due to operator error.
