Everyone has viewed, forwarded or been shown some of the most popular bike trick videos on the internet today. However, most people still believe that dirt jumping can only be done using specialized bikes. However, this is not true; jump tricks can be done using almost any style of bike including mountain bikes, road bikes, and others. Some bikes have frames and features that will make jumping easier, but with a few modifications, your own bike could be used to start jumping today.
True to their names, modern jump bikes are bicycles specially designed for jumping and other bike tricks. They usually will look quite similar to a regular mountain bike; however, there are a few key differences. The seat of a jump bike can often be lowered much further to allow the rider to perform tricks without the seat causing an issue. The frames and wheels are also built tougher to withstand the constant beating many of these bikes take from the riders from the constant intense landings and also falls. These bikes are also built to be as low weight as possible without losing frame strength. This makes vertical jumps easier as there is less weight to lift. Jump bicycles also have front only suspension to allow the rider a greater amount of control over the bike.
A mountain bike can also be used for jumping. Look for a bike with a smaller frame, which will make it lighter. You should also be sure that the bike is equipped with shocks on the front suspension. It can be difficult to find a mountain bike with front only suspension, but many tricks can be performed without it.
Modified BMX frames are excellent candidates for bike jumps and tricks. The position of the seat further over the rear wheel makes tricks like ollies and wheelies easier to perform. The chainstay of a jumping BMX bike is also shortened to better distribute weight through the bike frame. When using a BMX bikes, use wide, treaded tires and inflate to the low end of the PSI range for better landings.
Dirt bike jumping is still a fairly new sport and this means that bicycle manufacturers and even the athletes themselves have not decided on an ideal bike, frame, or other design feature that is best for jumping. Because there is no current standard for jump bikes, many jumpers use the bike they prefer and modify it as needed for jumping.
