A mini digital camera is an efficient, high tech tool that can capture average to excellent pictures, as well as video.  Digital technology has made it possible to create smaller and smaller cameras, and many models offer some variant of scene selection, exposure settings, and white balance.

The epitome of mini cameras, the Innovage Outdoor digital camera is a tiny take along that has a small sensor and 16MB of memory.  This may not seem like a lot, but with only 1.5 megapixel resolution, it holds quite a few pictures.  This tiny powerhouse also offers video camera and web cam capabilities, and picture download by direct cable to the computer.

While this truly mini digital camera designed to fit on a key chain may only have a small 1.5 megapixel sensor, high end camera manufacturers make comparable substitutes that easily fit in a shirt or pants pocket.  These are not a substitute for a digital single lens reflex camera, but they are the perfect companion for any traveling or events.

Take the Leica D-Lux series of point and shoot digital cameras.  These  mini cameras pack loads of features into their 4″long x 2″ wide body, and are only an inch thick.  The D-Lux sensor offers many of the capabilities of larger slr cameras:  High resolution 10.1 megapixels, zoom lens, built-in memory of 50 mb, and compatibility with SD memory cards.  It also has multiple pre-set functions to adjust to different scenes, or manual control to put the control in the hands of the user.

The advantage of the Innovage, or another comparable mini digital camera, the 1.3 megapixel Pen Cam by Aiptek, is the extreme portability and disposability.  At around six dollars for the Innovage and thirty for the Aiptek, it is easily replaced if lost or stolen.  All that advanced technology on the Leica D-Lux series starts at around $800 before accessories are purchased.

Having a mini digital camera that fits on a key chain is an excellent toy if average to poor picture quality is not a problem.   These cameras are unlikely to produce marketable images, however. Furthermore, they will fail to produce a decent image in many extreme lighting situations,  where more camera control is necessary.
