There are many advantages to using wireless network security cameras to monitor outdoor areas. Even with the challenges that the outdoor environment poses, advancement in surveillance equipment has improved the quality of the video captured as well as the rest of the entire security system. But despite all this, there are still some limitations to an outdoor network security camera which is why it has not yet become the standard for all security systems.

The first limitation of any wireless network security system is the signal strength and range. Although it is true that a camera can be installed and operated anywhere within range of the network node, there are objects and other obstacles that limit the range of the signal. Especially obtrusive are large metal objects or thick walls. For maximum distance and signal strength there should be a clear line of sight between transmitter and receiver.

Another limitation that especially affects outdoor security cameras is the power supply. There are little or no building codes that require power outlets to be built around the exterior of a building and for that reason it can be hard to find somewhere to plug a camera in for power. While these wireless cameras might be free of a tether in terms of video data transfer, most still require some cable to transfer power. There are also battery packs and solar powered cameras that can help resolve the power issue. Battery packs will require a little more monitoring but solar panels help ensure that the batteries are recharged whenever possible.

The final limitations to wireless network security systems include the security of the network itself. Typically anyone within range of the wireless signal can tap into the network and intercept data being transferred within the network. That is where encryption and network protection technologies come into play. As a manager or owner of network system these security features must be utilized to prevent unwanted access.
