True, ironing isn’t typically considered to be a manly way to pass the time. Of course it can be irritating and very time consuming, and you may even end up burning up your shirt (or your living room). However, a perfectly pressed shirt is definitely worth the time you spend ironing. Good news for you: with the right technique plus a little forethought, you will easily cut the frustration out of ironing your formal shirts and become a real “iron man”.
Before we begin, plan out your ironing strategy! Plenty of time and frustration will be prevented if you just plan out a little in advance. Primarily, don’t iron one or two shirts at a time — setting up and tearing down the ironing board and iron takes a lot of time, so instead try to batch together a nice stack of shirts to attack all in one sitting. See! You haven’t even started ironing and you’re saving time.
- The first thing you want to do is setup the ironing board, your iron, and your wrinkled formal shirts. If you can, track down some distilled water to use when filling up your iron. Hard water can leave stains on your nice formal shirt after a few ironings. As you’re getting started, you’ll want to setup the tapered end of the board facing to the left if you are a right handed ironer (and vice versa).
- Next, dial in the right heat setting for your iron and formal shirts. Some shirts can be very finicky — set the iron too hot and you can burn them, but if the iron is too cold you’ll be wasting your time and not getting any wrinkles out. A good idea is to start the iron off at a cooler temperature, and then slowly work the temperature dial up until it looks like the wrinkles are coming out easily. Be sure you make a note of the appropriate heat setting for next time.
- Prep your shirt for ironing. Place the shirt flat on the back, opening up the front of the shirt. If your shirt is extremely wrinkled, be sure to use the spray button from your iron before beginning. The extra water will help to release the tougher wrinkles. Be sure to keep the iron constantly moving so you don’t scorch the shirt’s fabric.
- Next, iron the collar - Press the inside of the collar first, gradually moving the iron from the collar’s tips inward. Once the inside is finished up, flip the shirt over and work the wrinkles on the outside of the shirt’s collar. (Note that different collar styles can require different techniques and additional ironing, depending on your formal shirts.)
- Next, work on the shirt’s back. It helps to thread the pointed end of the ironing board through the sleeve of the shirt you’re working on. Iron the upper arm and back of one side of the shirt, then switch the sleeve and iron the other side. To do the lower back of the shirt, you’ll need to rearrange the shirt on the board (let the collar hang over the edge), but this area of the shirt is probably the easiest to iron.
- To iron the lower sleeve, lay them flat along the ironing board, folding them along the original crease lines. You may also want to lightly press the cuffs of the shirt along these crease lines for a more polished look.
- Lastly, let’s iron the front of the shirt. This is often the most difficult part of the shirt, mostly because there’s lots of corners and creases to watch for. However, we can utilize the pointed tip of the iron to reach corner areas and spots around the buttons.
Now, unless something’s gone very wrong, you should now have a formal shirt that looks significantly less wrinkled than before you started. Be sure you hang the shirt up, or you’ll ruin all your hard work when the shirt gets wrinkled again from laying on the ironing board or chair back.
