All the health and safety risks in the UK are regulated by a body known as the Health and Safety Executive. It is your right as an employee of a company to have the ability to work in a safe and secure environment. The law has declared this right and cannot be altered by any employer.
Here is a brief rundown of the basics of that law:
1. At all times the employer should always try their best to make sure that the employees who work for their company are kept safe and away from any potential dangers that could harm them.
2. If an employee of a company needs to work in hazardous conditions then it is the employers responsibility to make sure that they are given the best protective gear and equipment that will aid their safety.
3. Employees have the right and are encouraged to notify their workplace of any potential dangers they may feel could harm themselves and others.
4. You have the right to get in contact with the Health and Safety Executive if your employer does not take note or head your complaints and suggestions.
5. With regards to your own personal health and safety it is your own responsibility.
If there has been an accident in the workplace then it is the responsibility of the employer to officially make a report of this incident if the accident has made it so the employee is unable to do their job for more than 3 days. These reports are usually kept in an employer’s official accident report log
Of course it is always a good idea to make sure that you are safe in the workplace; here are a few good tips to consider:
- Risk assessments should be taken on a regular basis that review the equipment used by the employer and the work conditions they offer
- Employees should be making sure that themselves and their colleagues are following all health and safety procedures
- Consistent health and safety training should be considered to all the people in the workplace. This will ensure that they keep their knowledge up to speed with the latest safety procedures.
Employees have the right to make a claim against their employers if they have been injured at work and feel it was not their own fault. There are many 3rd party businesses and health and safety consultants that can offer help and support if you find yourself in this position.
