With the dutch invention coffee pods hitting the market, people have to choose whether they want to stick to their old reliable way of coffee making, or if they want to switch to coffee pods. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Filter coffee involves putting roasted and ground coffee in a filter and pouring hot water over it. The water absorbs the the coffee’s oils and essence, passes through the filter into a coffee pot. This method is usually done with a drip coffee maker. Paper filters originated in Germany and were invented by the company called Melitta. Bentz. These days you also have metal filters, which take more to clean up, but costs less money overall.
Coffee pods are an invention of Dutch company Douwe Egberts in collaboration with Philips. These Douwe Egberts coffee pods were given the name Senseo. Senseo has grown incredibly popular, due to it’s easy to use system. A coffee pod is a measured amount of ground coffee within it’s own filter.
The biggest advantages coffee pods have is their incredible speed and usability. It’s so easy to make a cup of coffee with this system. There’s few things you need to do. Pop the pod in the machine. Put water in. hit the on-button, so the water will start heating, and when it’s finish you press another button, and you’re finished. All this takes is a couple of mere seconds. When you’re finished, all you need to do is throw away the pod. So there’s also practically no clean-up involved.
Coffee pods also come in various flavors. If you’re an espresso enthusiast, pop in an espresso pod. If you like café latte, pop in one of those.
Now coffee pods have filter coffee beat on pretty much anything, except large servings. If you’re having a lot of guests, and want to serve them all coffee, a drip coffee maker is probably more useful than a Senseo machine, since a Senseo machine can only make a total of 2 cups at a time. So if you need to make a lot of coffee, you’re probably better off with a traditional drip coffee maker.
Of course you’ll need to get one that can produce a lot of coffee, like a 12 cup coffee maker. A 4 cup coffee maker wouldn’t make the process a lot faster or easier.
So there’s all you need to know on coffee pods and filter coffee to make an informed choice. As you can probably tell, the advantages of both types of coffee brewing complement each other somewhat. So if you can afford it, just get both.
