diamond-engagement-ringBuying an engagement ring is part of the most important decision that any person will make in their life. For the man, who is usually the proposer, this is an incredibly complicated and expensive time. Most men, will have no experience of buying any rings, let alone engagement rings, and they will soon find that as soon as they start to look for that perfect one for their future wife that there are many decisions to be made.

Not to worry, we are here to help. In this guide we will look at the choices that a man has when it comes to buying an engagement ring and how to reach a final decision. But first, lets start with the basics. Although there are a lot of things that you will need to consider when buying an engagement ring, the main thing that you are going to need to do is decide how much money you have to spend. You need to set a realistic budget before you start shopping. There is a so-called tradition that states that a man should spend three months salary on an engagement ring. This is, by many peoples means, thought to be rather excessive for some, and perhaps even a rumour or urban legend spread by the diamond industry. You need to spend what you can afford. Hopefully you will have been saving up for a while, and you will have a good idea of how much you want to fork out. Don’t skimp, but also don’t break the bank. Remember that the next thing that you are going to have to pay for is going to be a wedding!

OK, so now we’ve got it clear that you need to have a budget in mind it is time to start looking for rings. Now, tradition dictates that you should buy a single, large diamond mounted on a plain ring in a simple but stylish setting. Sure, these are very lovely rings, but as you will see later there are many other types of ring that you can buy.

engagementLet’s assume that you are going to stick with tradition and get this type of ring. Now, here’s where it gets complicated. Rather than finding a ring you like the look of and simply buying it, you need to consider the four ‘C’s of diamond purchasing. Let’s take a look at each of these in a little more detail.

Firstly we have the cut. Diamonds come in lots of different cuts, ranging from the asscher cut to the emerald cut, from the traditional princess cut to a brilliant cut. There are all kinds of weird and wonderful names applied to essentially what the shape of the diamond you choose is. These cuts are designed to show of diamonds in different ways for both aesthetic reasons as well as to show off or hide the next thing you need to consider and that is the clarity of the diamond.

Clarity is how clear the diamond is, or more specifically how many visible flaws or facets there are in the diamond. Now, you probably won’t be able to see many of these imperfections with the naked eye, but women have a way of spotting these things, and jewellers obviously have special tools to do this. So far you have the cut and clarity to consider, but it doesn’t end there. The next thing you need to look at is the carat. The carat is quite easily, and it is a measure of the size of the ring. From a women’s perspective usually the bigger the better, however you might well be in a situation where a ring looks too big. In this case you should consider what looks good.

We’re nearly there as far as buying a diamond is concerned; the final thing that you need to get on to is the color. Now usually the color you will go for is a clear diamond, but did you know that you can get diamonds in all kinds of different colors? These colored diamonds have become increasingly popular with celebrities. You can get pink, blue, black, rose, and yellow diamonds. Colored diamonds are caused by various chemical reactions at the time that the diamond was formed. The color will of course have an effect on price, as these are rarer diamonds. Also the deeper or stronger the color the more expensive it will be. Colored diamonds aren’t for everyone, and I’m sure if your partner wants one she will have dropped more than enough hints.

diamond-engagement-ringsOnce you have a chosen your diamond, or more specifically narrowed it down to the one that you can afford, you will start to look at the setting for the diamond. This essential means choosing a ring design. Here, once again, you are presented with a lot of choices and these again affect price. The main thing that you need to choose here is the metal. Usually you will go for yellow gold, white gold or platinum. White gold is probably the most popular, with the more expensive platinum is the preferred option for many ladies. The grey coloring of platinum and white gold look very good with a brilliant clear diamond so this is likely to be the best choice, but remember that whatever you choose will have an effect on the overall price and you certainly need to stick to your budget.

Choosing the metal will probably also influence your overall design choice. There are many different types of setting for the diamond and you need to choose one that looks good with the diamond you have chosen, and of course will look good on the finger of the women you intend to marry.

diamond ringYou don’t have to go for a diamond ring, there are many other precious stones that you can consider. There are also options like Cubic Zirconia engagement rings. Weight up all the choices, think about what your lady will like and get something that will be loved for the rest of her life.

As you can see buying an engagement ring is quite a complex process. Once you understand how it works you will be able to find the perfect ring for your budget and your partner. We hope you’ve found this ring buyers guide useful and good luck with your purchase.
