Comparing electricity suppliers is not as simple as comparing different brands of batteries in the store. If you just try to pick the one that appears to be the cheapest electricity supplier, there may be unknown factors lurking that may not make that the wisest choice. So, if you live in a state with a deregulated electricity market and are comparison shopping between electricity suppliers, it pays to educate yourself before making a choice.
There are quite a few questions that are useful to ask a prospective electricity supplier. The authority that regulates electricity in your state is likely to provide a guide to the process of choosing a supplier that includes many of these useful questions. For example, you will want to ask the supplier if the rate that they quote you includes everything, including transmission and distribution charges, fuel charges, sales tax, or other customer taxes or fees. You will also want to ask if their electricity prices are fixed, or if they will vary from month to month. It is also important to find out the length of the agreement or contract that you would be signing, and if there are any early termination fees for leaving before the end of the contract.
There are also factors that may play into your decision beyond just the price and the contract. For example, you may be interested in finding out whether the electricity supplier uses any renewable sources of energy, and if they provide options to choose renewable energy if you desire it. You may also want to know what sort of customer service they provide, and what the customer service hours are. Different suppliers may allow different methods of payment, and you may want to know what your payment options are. Finally, you will probably want to make sure that the supplier is certified or licensed by the authority that regulates electricity in your state.
Once you have done the proper research and asked the appropriate questions of the potential electricity suppliers, you will be in a position to make an informed decision to get the best deal possible on your electricity.
