It is customary to put a departed loved one in a casket prior to being laid to rest or cremated. There may be some societies or religious rules that require another method, but using a casket is the most common choice for containing the body. When you need to choose among a wide variety of caskets from a funeral home or casket store/outlet, this list of caskets ranked according to the most durable material to the least durable may help you.

Metal caskets
Metal caskets are the most durable. Metal can be shaped and molded into a nice design too. Choose this type if you plan to exhume the body after a decade or so and move the bones into another space, like in an ossuary.

1. Bronze caskets. Coffins made of bronze will last for centuries. This is because bronze is an extremely strong material. It resists corrosive and abrasive elements present in the ground.  The casket costs for Bronze if fairly significant.

3. Copper caskets. Like bronze and metal, copper coffins are also resistant to rust. It also has an elegant color and finish.

4. Stainless steel caskets. This type is the least durable among the coffins that are not made out of wood. It is one-third less effective than bronze caskets. However, steel will eventually rust.

Wooden caskets
When you are in a budget or you believe in contributing to the circle of life, you may want to opt for a coffin made out of wood. Wood has been traditionally used to build coffins to hold the dearly departed. It is carefully constructed, sometimes hand-crafted or hand-carved, into beautiful caskets. Wooden caskets are biodegradable but it will take many years before they break down and are absorbed by the earth.

1. Cherry wood, walnut and mahogany. Among the hardwoods, these three are the deluxe materials used for constructing caskets.

2. Maple, oak, ash and elm. Coffins made from this group of wood are less expensive but also durable.

3. Pine, poplar and cottonwood. These materials are least expensive but no less effective for containing a corpse. You may remember Wild West movies where a pine box is built to hold the dead.

When the body is to be cremated, it is a sign of respect to place the body in a container before it is placed in the oven. Although it is not cost-effective to buy an expensive casket, you may opt for a pine box or a heavy-duty cardboard box.
