Coffee Versus Espresso: What Is The Difference?
Ordering coffee is not what it used to be since the takeover of mega-chain coffee shops. A consumer can choose between the type of milk, roast, and flavoring in their favorite hot beverage, not to mention a particular type of coffee. Ordering a coffee based beverage is some what of an art and is unique to each individual.
The grind of each beverage is different. Espresso and coffee are produced from the same coffee bean. The coarseness of the grind of the coffee bean is the distinct difference between espresso and coffee. Espresso grind must be ground to a fine grind. In an espresso pod, the fine grind is placed in between two filtered packets which are used for individual served espresso drinks. Coffee grinds are coarse in comparison and can vary in the degree of coarseness per drink.
Another distinct difference between espresso and coffee is the preparation. Coffee is made with hot water in a French press, drip coffee maker or percolator. The brewing process is relatively short, and can take anywhere from a few minutes to 15 and 20 minutes. Espresso is created in an espresso maker which uses a high concentration of hot water. The degree of temperature of water is much higher than that of a drip coffee maker. It is necessary to use the high water pressure with the fine grind espresso. Espresso is generally made in shots and can be made in one to two shots at a time depending on the machine. The time required to brew espresso is very short compared to that of coffee.
Espresso is a popular base for many beverages found in coffee specialty stores. An espresso pod can also sold in conveniently individualized packages which can be used for home. Lattes, mochas, and cappuccinos are the most popular beverages available. Each espresso based beverage has its own unique characteristic. Coffee, however, is still the most popular breakfast beverage of and is available almost anywhere. In terms of price comparison, coffee is much cheaper than espresso.
Coffee beans are often sold in different roasts. Espresso is not made from flavored coffee beans, and must be ground from unflavored beans. Espresso gathers its flavor from added syrups for drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos.
