Okay, the days of Rambo are long gone. Unfortunately the Rambo type cheapo survival knives are still around. Now the rage in survival knives are long heavy machete type knives. So called survival guru’s swear this is what you need should you find yourself in survival situation. I’ve been beating around the woods for over 20 years and have never felt the need for a big blade. Of course, if I know I might be out for a few days, I carry a hatchet either on my belt or in my pack. No use in using a survival knife as a hatchet!

My favorite survival knife to carry when I’m going to be out for a few days is the Gerber Prodigy survival knife. This is a shorter version of the Gerber LMF survival knife, but just as useful, maybe more so in my opinion. The Prodigy comes with a nylon sheath that is MOLLE compliant. The blade is anodized and holds a razor sharp edge very well.

I repeatedly dulled it testing it by batoning wood blocks and it resharpened easily every time. I’ve had a number of Prodigy’s over the years, but this latest batch is my favorite.

The blade of my latest Gerber Prodigy survival knife has a half serrated edge near the hilt. At one time, I despised serrated knives. But over the years, they have became better and better and now I prefer them over a standard edge. You’ll find a lot of uses for the serrated section, mainly cutting small saplings and other materials that a smooth edge finds hard to cut!

I can’t think of many instances where I would want a larger survival knife than the Gerber Prodigy. Perhaps if I knew I would be placed on a deserted island for years on end without a hatchet, then yeah, I might take my Gerber LMF survival knife. But then again, I’m not so sure because the Prodigy is such a darned useful survival knife!

Not too long ago I bought a Humminbird 1197 fish finder and gps combo. I had to think long and hard about such a purchase, since the unit cost nearly 3 grand. But I knew that this would improve my fishing and enjoyment out on the lake. After I bought the unit, I needed a secure way to mount it to my boat. I knew the RAM-D-111U-C was well respected by many fishermen, so I ordered one and mounted it to my 20 foot aluminum boat.

The installation was pretty easy. I drilled 3 screws and used quality stainless steel headlight head bolts with nylock nuts to secure the unit to my console. My boat is a modified V and in high winds, it can really dish out the punishment.

About the third trip out, I had been fishing a small creek. When I came out of the creek into the main channel, I was hit with 15 to 20 mph winds which had kicked up the waves to about 2 foot or so. I had to run about 2 miles in this stuff and it beat me up really good, even at slow speed. It even knocked my battery box up front loose. Every time I came down off a wave it was with a resounding “BAM”.

The RAM-D-111U-C held my Humminbird 1197 firmly at first but as I continued to push through the waves, the unit began to lean backward a little. As I kept going, the unit kept flopping backward until I finally reached over the console and pulled it back up. I tightened the side screws down as tight as I could and it kept the unit secured until I reached the ramp. This mount is a beast and I don’t know of any fish finders it’s designed for that it couldn’t hold.

I don’t know of another mount that would have kept my Humminbird 1197 from receiving major damage on that trip! This mount is beefy and easily holds my 10 pound plus unit, even in the rough stuff.

One aspect of taking a trip that we can easily improve is in the observing that we do. Simply by bringing a pair of binoculars, we can enjoy nature, so it is also in that area that we should look to improve in a meaningful way. After all, despite its usefulness, binoculars have become too hard to handle and carry around because you usually had to place it in its casing and back out again every time you had to use it, which understandably was cumbersome. And worse, by the time you pulled it out, the moment might be gone, thus defeating the purpose of nature watching.

Therefore, it is great that we can purchase a binocular harness easily, and even a camera harness, to be able to handle our equipment better. This way, you binocular is always on hand, allowing you to seamlessly use it and put it out as you wish.

Not everyone is the same in their choice of tents, so you need to be sure, what kind of tent you want, because not all six man tents are the same. You will also need to know how much floor space you will need, even though all six person tents are designed to fit six people, they still differ in size. So do not buy any six person tent, just because it says that it can accommodate six people.

When purchasing a six man tent from the internet, you should also consider the reviews other people give to said tent. Although other people camp differently from the way you go camping, you should still consider the advice and opinions of other people. When you are finally going to buy a tent on the internet, I highly recommend that you go to eBay and Amazon before any other site, just because they are the biggest internet stores around.
