Giving a cushion cut engagement ring was very popular in the past, but over time, the diamond cutting technologies got better which meant that this cut was superseded by newer more dazzling ones. The less sparkly cushion cut was consigned to history, and considered by many to be too old fashioned to be marketable. However, times change, and there has been a huge revival of interest in antique and vintage engagement rings, especially set with gemstones in the older styles. So cushion cut engagement rings are now widely sought after by couples wishing to add some extra magic to the marriage proposal.

The cushion cut is a 300 year old method of preparing diamonds, and the shape can be either square or rectangular, but is always slightly dome shaped, which is why it is said to look like a cushion. If you are thinking of running down to your local jewelry store to buy a cushion cut engagement ring however, don’t bother. The chances are they will not have any, because they are actually pretty rare these days. The reason is that they were out of fashion for so long that you will only be able to find the ones which were in circulation many years ago. For modern ones and also the antique ones, it is best to search online, but only go to large and highly reputable jewelry sites. One such example is DeBeers, which is world famous as a seller of wonderful diamond jewelry. But beware, although they have some exceptionally beautiful pieces, they also have very high price tags.

Ebay is a great place to look for bargains, and even this kind of jewelry can be found cheaply if you are lucky. Emeralds can be very delicate, and you must take a number of precautions when taking care of the gemstones. Try to keep them away from sunlight or hot environments. This may cause the oils in the emerald to dry out, causing cracks and also a loss of colour. Another thing to avoid is using cleaning chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners, as these will again cause the emeralds to dry out and crack.

In terms of the metal used for the actual emerald rings, the most common ones are gold or platinum, because of its solidarity and because the colour of the metals favours the green of the emerald. Titanium is also becoming widely used.

There are two forms of the stone commonly called jade. Both of these stones actually differ in mineral composition yet share many qualities which are alike. These two stones are named nephrite and jade.

All you need is a soft toothbrush, preferably one you do not use yourself and dish washing liquid.

Prepare a bowl of luke warm water and squirt in a drop or three of dish washing liquid and suds it up. Dip the Tiffany gold jewelry in the sudsy solution and with a soft toothbrush gives it a gentle scrubbing making sure to work the bristles of the brush into all the nooks and crannies. The scrubbing will remove the environmental elements it collects and oils and crud from your hands or whatever body part comes in contact with your jewelry. After a thorough cleaning, rinse your gold under warm water until there is no residue in the rinse water. Dry your gold with a soft cloth then give it a gentle buffing to make it shine once again.
