Led grow lights appeared at about the same time that LED technology had begun, and  now LED’s are a major force in lighting. The obvious advantages of using LED light are first, that they can be configured to emit light at very specific wavelengths, and second, that they consume much less energy and less waste heat.

Grow lighting is popular, because people can see the benefits of growing plants indoors, because they usually want to be in full control of their environment. Plants need heat, water, nutrients and light, but light is the absolute key to plant growth because it controls the process of photosynthesis in the interaction with a molecule called chlorophyll.

Now, chlorophyll, as it appears, is surprisingly picky about what kind of light it will play ball with. Most of the visible spectrum of light is useless – it has two very specific sweet spots, one in blue and one in the red part of the spectrum. And that, historically, has a problem with conventional grow lights that filaments or fluorescent lamps as they emit light rather uniformly over a wide range of wavelengths.

Another major problem with traditional lighting technologies is that they are actually really bad at converting electricity into light, period. Most of it is dissipated as heat and little light that gets into the converted at least in mostly all the wrong type of plant. They’re just very inefficient in performing a job they were intended. Not so with the LED.

Light-emitting diodes, electronic devices that convert electrical energy is more or less directly into photons (ie light). It is more complicated than in the details, but for practical purposes they are very energy efficient. But the really neat bit is that they can be made to emit light very precisely defined wavelengths.

So for a simple dawn, an LED configured for blue and one red light indicates exactly what you mean the plant needs. More advanced LED grow lights include a large number of individual LEDs and the red / blue balance will be dynamically adjusted for different stages of plant growth.

So why is there a dispute led grow lights? Logically, it seems to be a much better solution for the internal development of the plant. The answer lies in human perception and expectation. Every new technology comes along and promises to solve any number of problems involved and people expect it to be a miraculous savior of mankind. Thus, expectations are already high. Well, sorry to say, but rarely does any technology meet those expectations.

Reality with virtually all new technologies, when she first on the scene, they are not particularly well developed. You can have fun in a small space by choosing a theme for your plot. The Mediterranean look makes a good choice if you have a space that you use mainly as an outdoor room. This could be dominated by flowers, with something hibiscus mixed with cool camellias and geraniums that are allowed to sprawl. And, as a substitute for the cypresses that show up like exclamation marks in a Mediterranean landscape, you could plant a Lawson’s cypress which will grow in a small bed or a tub.

The tropical look works well on a formal terrace. This can include Yucca with its short trunk and needle like leaves, and the Chusan palm if you have a little more space. These could be joined by some of your indoor plants, the rubber plant or the Swiss cheese plant, for instance, in mid summer.

A dramatic way to treat an area that is little more than a backyard is to turn it into a  miniature jungle – this is a good treatment for a corner too. Add a friendly touch with wind spinners, and other colorful devices. You could have a background of bamboo and pampass grass  with a creeter – the Russian vine would be splendid here – to entangle itself around them. In the foreground, put some of the large ornamental forms of rhubarb, for instance, with its huge purple-red leaves, or the South American prickly rhubarb which needs a damp soil but could take the place of a tree. Then you could underplant with hostas, which would enjoy the shade of the other taller plants, and, here again, during the summer months your rubber plant and Swiss cheese plant would look good. Taking this type of garden decor even further, the false castor oil plant will survive out of doors in a sheltered place all year round, and you can even try the true fruiting banana if you put some stacking or straw over it in the winter months. It may seem to be killed off by heavy frosts, but it will usually throw up fresh sucker in the spring.

Another idea for a small space, such as a roof garden or possibly even a balcony, is to take the traditional willow pattern plate and bring it to life, either in miniature on a window sill, using bonsai trees and a  sink garden, or on a somewhat larger sale in a courtyard using dwarf trees. Water is essential for this, but you could have a small stream using an underwater pump. Pebbles can be found on the beach or on sale in builders’ yards, and for a very small scale stream you can use gravel, obtainable from aquariums shops.

A strong, simple theme can work particularly well in a confined space. In a basement area of a town house, for example, you can work the oriental look. A bamboo grow in in the foreground could be echoed by a bamboo trellis and slatting against any of the walls. The whole scheme would be drawn together by adding large ornamental pieces.
