Led grow lights appeared at about the same time that LED technology had begun, and  now LED’s are a major force in lighting. The obvious advantages of using LED light are first, that they can be configured to emit light at very specific wavelengths, and second, that they consume much less energy and less waste heat.

Grow lighting is popular, because people can see the benefits of growing plants indoors, because they usually want to be in full control of their environment. You can have fun in a small space by choosing a theme for your plot. The Mediterranean look makes a good choice if you have a space that you use mainly as an outdoor room. This could be dominated by flowers, with something hibiscus mixed with cool camellias and geraniums that are allowed to sprawl. And, as a substitute for the cypresses that show up like exclamation marks in a Mediterranean landscape, you could plant a Lawson’s cypress which will grow in a small bed or a tub.

The tropical look works well on a formal terrace. This can include Yucca with its short trunk and needle like leaves, and the Chusan palm if you have a little more space. These could be joined by some of your indoor plants, the rubber plant or the Swiss cheese plant, for instance, in mid summer.

It may seem to be killed off by heavy frosts, but it will usually throw up fresh sucker in the spring.

Another idea for a small space, such as a roof garden or possibly even a balcony, is to take the traditional willow pattern plate and bring it to life, either in miniature on a window sill, using bonsai trees and a  sink garden, or on a somewhat larger sale in a courtyard using dwarf trees. Water is essential for this, but you could have a small stream using an underwater pump. Pebbles can be found on the beach or on sale in builders’ yards, and for a very small scale stream you can use gravel, obtainable from aquariums shops.

A strong, simple theme can work particularly well in a confined space. In a basement area of a town house, for example, you can work the oriental look.
