If you are like most people, Vitamin B12 is not something that you give much thought to.  However, that may be a serious health mistake.  According to a large study that was conducted at Tufts University, 65% of its participants had B12 levels that were low enough to cause health concerns.  Although only 9% of the group studied has B12 levels low enough to be considered a B12 deficiency, the remainder of the group was already at high risk of developing b12 deficiency symptoms and other chronic health issues. In fact, the entire group had levels of the vitamin that were low enough to cause neurological symptoms and chronic disease.  Let’s look at a few things that place you at high risk for developing low levels of B12.

Although the above mentioned study showed that B12 deficiency strikes young and old alike, most other research indicates that once you pass the age of 40, you have a much higher chance of developing a B12 deficiency.  The reason for this is that B12 requires a substance called intrinsic factor in order to be assimilated into your blood stream.  This is a substance that is created in your stomach and production of it decreases dramatically as you age.  In fact, some older people do not product intrinsic fact at all.  Some studies estimate that at least 20% of those over the age of 65 have a B12 deficiency and  even more are dealing with “low normal” levels that can cause serious side effects.  What makes it especially challenging for members of this group to diagnose a B12 deficiency is that many of the very early signs of low levels of B12 are also commonly associated with aging.  So, quite often people just disregard it when they become forgetful or have low levels of energy.  In truth, this may just be a sign that you need to take regular b12 shots.

In addition to your age, your behavior can place you at high risk for developing low B12 levels.  In fact, some studies indicate that an astounding 54% of all smokers have a full blown B12 deficiency.  People who drink a lot are also at risk, because alcohol can strip the body of its B12 stores.  Normally, the body stores up to 10,000 mcg of B12 in your body’s tissues – mostly in the liver, nervous system and kidneys. This can be challenging for doctors to recognize because heavy alcohol consumption can raise your bodies serum B12 levels, giving you test results that indicate that your levels are normal when in fact this is not the case.

If you follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet you are also at risk of developing a B12 deficiency.  It is estimated that at least 80% of vegans and 50% of vegetarians have a full blown deficiency.  If you are a vegetarian or vegan and have been for a while, it may be necessary for you to take B12 shot until you can get your body’s stores back up.  After this oral supplementation should be sufficient.  Some studies indicate that thanks to the low levels of mercury in plant based diets that vegans and vegetarians actually need less B12.  The reason for this is that it is believed that mercury stands in the way of B12 absorption and that in the absence of it B12 would be absorbed much more easily.
