If you are thinking of going leather chair shopping, you may want to take a few minutes first and learn what kinds of leather are used to make furniture. If you don’t know the different characteristics of the different types of leather, there may be ramifications that you have not even thought of.

First of all is the grain.  There are basically three grains used to make leather furniture: full grain, top grain, and split grain.  Each of them come with different price tags and have different characteristics.

If you want the leather to show the natural imperfections that are inherent in leather, you want full grain.  People fond of this type believe that leather has a personality that is only truly appreciated with full grain.  It is also the softest of the three types, but is the least durable.

Most people choose to go with either top grain or split grain furniture.  Of the two, top grain is the better quality, and will cost you a bit more.  It can be difficult for a lay person to tell the difference, but top grain often feels “heavier” or “thicker”.

I could actually add buckskin leather to the list here, but if you are paying the money for a piece of genuine buckskin furniture, you are not going to be taking advice from this article.  Buckskin leather is an elite material, and not seen very often, though it is extremely soft, durable and supple.

One final bit of advice is to research the proper methods for cleaning whatever type of leather furniture you are buying.  Some Murphy’s Oil Soap might be great for your top grain recliner, but could very well ruin your full grain love seat.  Happy furniture shopping!
