As a DJ with 10 years experience mixing house and breaks sets, I am totally convinced that the old aphorism “you get what you pay for” is true. Whether you’re buying cables, mixers or headphones, you are so much better off investing extra money in the present than have to replace gear and end up blowing a lot more cash in the long term.

I’ve bought a lot of DJ headphones so I learned my lesson the hard way. My first pair was pretty generic and sounded ok, but because they were cheap (about $35-$45 I think), they quickly became unusable. Part of it was their insufficient physical resilience as well as not simply not being practical — they weren’t the “cover your ear” kind which is essential next to a booming monitor.

For my next pair I went one step up in price, spending about $100 on some headphones that perfectly covered my ears and were much more structurally solid. As a fellow DJ, I’m sure you’ve found that your headphones get twisted and turned constantly. If they’re not really sturdy, they’ll soon loosen up under all of the pressure. Luckily this next pair of DJ headphones lasted much longer than the first. But as will all things, they too gradually gave way — the swivel joints started to split.

That led to my third and hopefully final pair of the best DJ headphones I’ve ever had. Actually, they look the same as when I took them out of the box. Of course, this is where the old adage needs to be restated. I paid nearly twice as much as the previous pair – around $200 for a big-ticket item produced by one of the most well-known DJ mixer companies on earth. The quality difference is palpable. While they cost a lot more, I have no doubt these headphones will endure for a long time.

You may find it interesting that I haven’t mentioned anything yet about audio quality. The reason is simply that the audio character of all hi-end DJ headphones is outstanding. All but the most fanatical audiophile will find that they sound excellent. So unless you’re the type who is constantly scrutinizing every minor difference in frequency ranges, don’t worry about the audio quality. If you buy something in the $100-$200 range they will unmistakably sound fantastic.

Bottom line is — spend more at the beginning then you’d prefer. Then you won’t need to reach into your wallet in the long term to replace something that broke down because it was cheap to begin with. I’ll see you on the dance floor!

In 1968, Patton Gibson flew his whole family to his wife’s home country of Australia. He had a knack of getting into trouble often and soon started to learn how to drink, a vice he’ll have a life long struggle with. His sister, noticing the dangerous path Mel is leading to, secretly applied him to The National Institute of Dramatic Arts since his graduation is nearing. Mel’s first film was Summer City in 1976. He was 20 years old when he was offered the low budget film. This film landed him an agent and after 3 years learned about an audition being held in Sydney. He barely made it to the audition still dazed with hangover but it was rumored that the minute he entered the room the director immediately wanted him for the job. Mad Max (1979) would turn out to be the film that would make a huge impact on his life. The 1980s was a time of a growth spurt for the Australian movie industry and Mel Gibson’s career was able to ride along. His next film was Gallipoli (1981) where he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role from the Australian Film Institute. On that same year Mel reprised his role as Max Rockantansky in the Mad Max sequel The Road Warrior which grossed over $23 million dollars – a respectable amount of revenue at that time. The film The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) showed Mel Gibson’s dramatic acting opposite Sigourney Weaver and even cemented his credibility as an actor with a wide range of talent. The third installment of the Mad Max series Beyond Thunderdome (1985) catapulted him even further into stardom. This led him to being named People Magazine’s very first Sexiest Man Alive. Known to be a man with a short fuse and moody character, Mel Gibson quickly made a connection with his next character role in the first of 4 of Lethal Weapon series. The Gibson-Glover duo proved to be an excellent combination in the box office. Lethal Weapon (1987) raked in $127 million worldwide while the sequel, Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) grossed $137 million in the U.S. alone. From then on almost all his films were box office successes including Forever Young (1992), Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), Maverick (1994) and Braveheart (1995). Firstly it was on the VHS tape. Later the films were printed on CD’s and then later on DVD’s.
