When choosing a helmet, you must first decide which type is right for you. There are five primary helmets, all providing varying levels of safety and comfort. While style is always an important part of enjoying the road, keep in mind that a comfortable and well constructed helmet can save you life, so make sure you find the best all around helmet, and don’t just jump on the coolest looking one that you see.
1. The full face helmet–as the name suggests–covers the entire face and head, including protection for the base of the skull and the chin. While some complain of over-heating, this style, often including a mobile face shield, provides the maximum amount of rider safety.
2. Open face motorcycle helmets provide protection for the skull, but lacks the full face’s chin protection. These helmets sometimes lack a face shield, and are often worn with goggles, sunglasses, or other eye protection.
3. The modular helmet is a hybrid of the full and open face, providing the complete protection of a full face helmet, but with a face shield and chin bar that can be swiveled up, allowing access to the rider’s face.
4. The off-road helmet provides the same skull protection as that of a full-face helmet, only with a visor and a longer chin bar. This helmet also features an open face, allowing for better air flow. As a rule, this style helmet is used in conjunction with goggles and provides protection roughly equal to that of a full-face helmet.
Which helmet is right for you?
There are two top brands today: HJC and Shoei. But which is right for you?
HJC
We’ll start with the HJC helmets, all of which include “ACS” Advanced Channeling Ventilation Systems and SilverCool™ Interiors.
The FS-15 is one of HJC’s premier full face helmets boasting features including numerous colors and designs, a lightweight Advanced Fiberglass Composite Shell, a Pinlock®-prepared Face shield, and RapidFire™ Shield Replacement System for maximum comfort and performance. The FS-15 will provide the best protection available while utilizing cutting-edge technology to keep the rider’s face cool and dry.
The SPX brings HJC’s comfort and safety to the off-road helmet market, providing superior protection with an Advanced Polycarbonate Composite Weave Shell available in multiple colors and an eye port designed to accommodate any goggle while maximizing visibility.
The FS-2 is HJC’s extremely sleek, stylish, and affordable open face helmet. This helmet lets the rider feel the breeze on their face while providing top-of-the-line protection and features, including Advanced Fiberglass Composite Weave Shell in an array of colors and a removable neck curtain, complete with speaker pockets.
Shoei
You will find Shoei helmets almost everywhere on the road. They constantly strive to improve their designs for comfort, safety, and style. As an example, the RF-1100 full face helmet is an improvement on the RF-1000 model. Featuring a Q.R.S.A. Base Plate System and top-of-the-line ventilation, this helmet provides maximum safety while emphasizing comfort and a quiet ride.
Declaring itself “the absolute pinnacle of all off-road helmets,” Shoei’s VFX-W lives up to that statement, melding style, comfort, and safety into a superior off-road helmet, which includes state of the art liner, ventilation, and quick-release systems.
