Axle stands are crucial tools for a mechanic and it is imperative to ensure the stands have adequate safety features. Axle stands, also known as jack stands, are applied underneath a vehicle after it has been raised with a floor jack or other lifting equipment. The stand works to hold the vehicle elevated to perform a particular repair and are usually placed underneath each side of each axle on the car if appropriate.
The main purpose of this equipment is to support the car in the event the floor jack fails. Without the support from the axle stands, anyone working underneath the car could be seriously injured or killed.
Different types of axle stands exist, all with different weight ratings and attachments for particular axle shapes. When purchasing a set of axle stands, compare the safety standards of the particular axle stands you will be purchasing with the requirements needed by the vehicle or machine you will be working on.

Investigate the construction of the stand if purchasing pre-owned. Look at the overall appearance for signs of rust, broken welds, or general deterioration. If the stands are used and appear to have been freshly painted, pick them up and pull on them a bit. A good stand should not have cracked paint after a bit of rough handling, they should be able to withstand thousands of pounds of pressure so pulling on them with your own strength should do nothing to them.
Make sure the feet are stable. If there are no stabilizing feet or if they appear to have deteriorated, this is not safe. The stand could slip on soft or uneven surfaces.
What does the support mechanism look like? By and large there are a couple versions of support mechanisms on stands. One is the ratchet, normally found on heavy duty axle stands, which is usually safer because it provides for better control when adjusting for height. The second most common mechanism is the peg, which is simply a long piece of metal that fits through a hole in the stand at the height you want it to be. These are often hard to control and are more susceptible to malfunction do to rust or damage. If this type of stand is your only option, ensure the pegs slide in and out easily and that there is a safety catch present.
You will find that there are many different choices when it comes to purchasing axle stands. It is important to remember that this piece of equipment could save your life or save you from serious injury. With this in mind you should focus more on purchasing a stand that is quality with adequate safety features rather than saving money.
