Many people, when they hear about butterfly knives, instinctively wonder ‘Are Butterfly Knives Illegal?’ Butterfly knives, also known as Balisong knives or fan knives, are of course illegal to use in committing a crime. Whether they are illegal in general depends on where you live.
If you live in Australia, you would need a special permission to own a butterfly knife. In Canada and the UK they are illegal unless they are antiques and not something you just bought. It is illegal in these countries to buy or sell these kinds of knives; if you order one from abroad and have it shipped to you, this is also illegal and you can face prosecution. Germany outlaws all Butterfly Knives, be they Benchmade Butterfly Knives, Balisong Butterfly Knives, or Butterfly pocket knives.
In some other countries, such as the Philippines and Hong Kong, the larger butterfly knives are illegal but smaller ones are allowed. In Hong Kong they must be miniature to be allowed, whereas the Philippines is more open in this regard.
In the US, it varies a bit from state to state. Some states outlaw them completely; in fact, one knife company was fined many thousands of dollars for sending these knives through the postal service. Check not only the state laws but also your local laws before carrying a butterfly knife around. In some places just larger ones are illegal, in other places it is fine to own one but not carry it about, and in at least one state, you can carry one in public as long as it is not concealed.
One thing to note is that butterfly knife trainers are not in the same category as butterfly knives. Trainers have a blunt blade and are therefore allowed in places where regular butterfly knives are not.
