Considered a girl’s best friend, diamonds have been treated as a symbol of love for several years now. For this reason and many others, man made diamonds have created a lucrative market. Less expensive man made diamonds have been developed and are not only a boom for the jewelry industry but technology as well.
The origin of man made diamonds can be traced back to several hundred years. In 1893, an Arizonian scientist stumbled upon tiny structure that resembled diamonds. He used the structures by trying to create their imitations but it not until in 1902 when the first man made diamond was created, in the form of a ruby.
There are basically two kinds of man made diamonds, the synthetic and the stimulant. Its almost impossible to differentiate between the two, given that the only notable difference is that natural diamonds are created by nature while man made diamonds are created by science.
The stimulant diamonds are made up of different chemical compositions that include silicon carbide and moissanite. Among the several types of stimulant diamonds available, the most popular is the Cubic Zirconia. Made up of zirconium oxide, these diamonds have been available in abundance since the 1970s and are less costly too.
Synthetic diamonds are categorized according to the method used in creating them. Previously, they were created by duplicating their natural conditions, which were characterized by using high pressure and high temperature (HPHT). Several diamond manufacturing companies including Gemesis and LifeGem. Others, like Tairus, use both the HPHT plus another hydrothermal method.
Another commonly used method is the Chemical Vapor Deposition technique, whereby a diamond seed element is used to trigger a chemical reaction that leads to formation of vapor made up of carbon. This vapor leads the diamond formation on the seed, atom by atom. Apollo man made diamonds is one such brand employing this technique in creating its man made diamonds.
The uses of these man made diamonds are unlimited since they are not only attractive but also quite durable. The hardness of these diamonds allow them to act as thermal conductors, which can be deployed in radiation detection devices, lasers, computers, semiconductors and for other scientific research purposes. While natural diamonds are rare and expensive, man made diamonds offer the next best alternative to scientists and researchers.
