Backyard and commercial pools need frequent temperature checks especially in regions where the temperatures can get extremely hot or extremely cold. Thermometers are mainly for giving information about the pool’s water condition and they are installed simply as safety precaution especially when children are involved. Pool thermometers warn the pool maintenance personnel, the pool owner or the bathers that the water is too hot or too cold for them so keep away from swimming in it if it the temperature cannot be regulated.

The following is a three-step guide to buying a thermometer for swimming pools:

1. Go to home depots nearest you. There are lots of thermometers available in the market. There’s a thermometer used for measuring the body’s temperature, room temperature, for laboratory use, etc. So make sure that you’ll be getting the right thermometer for your pool.

2. Thermometers for pools are available either in analog or digital readings. Analogs need some time to equilibrate before it can give the exact water temperature so for monitoring efficiency, they should be fixed or installed in the pool. Digital thermometers on the other hand, give readings right away but they need to be charged and don’t last long like the analog. Both can measure the pool’s temperature accurately, though, so choose which one will suit best for your pool.

3. Test the accuracy of your thermometer. If the store would allow it and if they have the means to test it then check your chosen thermometer’s reading accuracy before you buy it. If not, check it yourself at home. Simply boil distilled water in a Pyrex glass and dip the thermometer into the boiling water. It should read 1000C or 3120F if you are situated at sea level. Expect lower readings when you are located above sea level. This rough test will at least give you the idea that you’ve bought a thermometer that gives precise data.

Important reminder: Do not be taken by the hype of trendy pool thermometers. Always remember that you are buying it for safety purposes. Make sure it gives you the accurate or precise data.
