I recently helped a friend choose a soda dispenser unit for his new home theater. This is part of a larger dream come true for him since he’s always wanted to have the classic movie theater experience right inside of his home, and the soda dispenser is obviously a vital part of that image. Because this was such an important thing for him, we wanted to make sure to get every piece of the project right from the beginning. We did a lot of research and made a few mistakes along the way, and I want to share the results of our project with you so you can avoid some of the wasted time and energy that we went through!

The first thing a lot of new soda dispenser buyers don’t understand is how to mix the soda properly in the first place. The reason this is relevant to purchasing a new unit is because sometimes people don’t understand that there’s nothing wrong with the soda dispensers that they purchased; rather, they didn’t understand the mixing process to begin with. It’s not too hard, but there’s a little bit of trial and error involved in the process unless someone just tells you right out what you need to be doing. My friend and I found that a ratio of 5 parts water to 1 part syrup yielded the best tasting and best consistency of soda then any other mix that we tried. If you start with a standard sized 1 gallon bag of syrup, you should be able to get about 6 gallons of soda using this ratio.

Next, we had some concerns about the soda dispenser unit, itself. We knew that he wanted to use the bag-in-box-style easy syrup refills, so one of our main priorities was to find something that featured easy connect points for these products. You’d be surprised how many different proprietary connectors there are on the market, but thankfully most of the higher-end dispensers come with these easy connect points as a standard feature.

The next issue that we didn’t consider right off the bat (and which ended up costing us restocking fees at the store when we had to buy a different product) was the ability to dispense multiple flavors of soda from one centralized gun, as well as the unit’s ability to act as a plain old water dispenser. Of course, this will not be an issue if you’re thinking about getting an over-the-counter soda dispenser like you’d find at a McDonald’s or Burger King where people can just put their cup under whatever tap that they choose. However, with the home theater-style under the counter system that uses a syrup gun (similar to what you’d find in a fully stocked wet bar) you need to make sure that you have enough connect points for all the different flavors that you want to provide.

There are a few other issues such as the size of the unit compared to how much space you have to install it in as well as the issue of cost versus features. Besides simply repainting this room, you may also wish to add a new bathroom vanity and sink. This project is quick and easy project but before you get started you need to look at whether you really need a whole new vanity or just a new basin. By only replacing the basin you will have less work and it will also cost you less money.

Oftentimes your vanity cabinet is in really good shape still. It probably only looks distressed because of any chips or stains that may be present there. If this is the case, then you will be able to easily sand and repaint the cabinet and replace the sink and the countertop. This will restore the beauty of your bathroom for only a small amount of money. Of course, whether or not you will be able to do this will depend upon if your washbasin is a single molded unit or if it’s a laminated countertop that has a separate washbasin.

If your sink is recessed below the counter level and there is no apparent seam, then you have a one-piece design. However, if you see a lip around it whenever it is viewed from beneath the underside of the counter, then it is a dropped cutout and thus the washbasin is a separate piece. In this case, you will be able to replace only the basin or scrap the entire thing and start all over. The replacement process will be similar either way.

Locate the shutoff value for your hot and cold water. If these aren’t located behind your sink, you’ll need to turn the water off to the whole house. Once you do this you can disconnect the supply lines. From there you need to remove your sink or countertop. Usually the countertop is screwed into the vanity base at the corners with wood screws. A removable sink is usually caulked into place and may also have retaining screws at the bottom of the counter. If you are going to reuse the countertop you’ll need to use a razor blade to gently cut through the caulk before prying the sink out. By applying painter’s tape to the outside of the sink you won’t scratch everything up while doing this.

After you have removed the original fixtures it is time to replace the vanity basin and reconnect the water. This is a simple DIY project that will only take you an afternoon to do. In the end you’ll add lots of beauty and value to your home though.
